The famous Tullip Garden is known as Keukenhof literally meaning “Kitchengarden”. There are more than 7 million bulbs in bloom every spring, with a total of 800 varities of tulips. This is one of the world’s most spectacular planned gardens. This park in Lisse, showcases seven million blooming bulbs on its grounds and countless other floral displays. Open for only two months a year, the gardens are a huge tourist draw for Amsterdam and the Netherlands. Keukenhof is a spectacualar flower garden. The best part is it is not only a garden the ‘flower land’ holds beautiful gardens, unique artwork and events.
‘Tulip Fever’ did change my life. It did that thing that sometimes happens when a book takes off – it opened doors on to whole other worlds.”-Deborah Moggach
I’ve always wanted to end up in Holland especially just for the tulips. What are the odds? The tulips and the festival didn’t disappoint. Walking around the gardens you’ll see colourful flower beds of tulips, daffodils, hyacinths and many more flowering bulbs.
The festival runs from late March to mid May. Depending on when you visit you’ll see different flowers in bloom. I went in early April the tulips were just starting to flower and there were thousands inside the pavilions.
Some of the best and most interesting tulips are in the indoor pavilions. The pavilions are where you’ll see just about every tulip colour and type imaginable and these are in flower for the entire festival. Most tulips inside the pavilions are full-blown. If you are a tulip, flower of gardening lover Keukenhof is just the place for you.
I was surprised to see there is also an indoor area for orchids. I have never seen such variety before. If only I could master the art of growing my own orchirds.
Around Keukenhof there are massive fields of tulips. These are almost better than the festival itself. I would reserve enough time to explore the area outside of the gardens to see the famous tulip fields. Try to visit for sunrise or sunset if you can.

I know it is hard to get up for sunrise but it’s totally worth it. You’ll need to allow plenty of time to scope out a location which is another reason to stay in Lisse, it’ll give you plenty of time to take photos of the tulip fields.
The best time to go to Keukenhof
In 2020 Keukenhof is open from 23 March untill 21 May 2020.I would recommend visiting in early April if you want to avoid the crowds and to see the hyacinths and daffodils. In May you’ll have a better chance for nice weather this is also the best time to see the outdoor tulip displays.
For more details visit Keukenhof’s official site.
